Home Instruction Policy and Information

HOMESCHOOLING PROCEDURE

Parents/guardians choosing to educate their child/children at home must request approval from the Portsmouth School Committee each year.  The following procedure will be followed:

  • Prior to the beginning of the school year, the parent/guardian must submit the PSD Letter of Intent & Compliance Agreement form to the Deputy Superintendent’s office with their intent to school their child/children at home.  This form will be termed the “Letter of Intent''.  Parents who decide to homeschool their children during the school year should notify the Deputy Superintendent’s office in writing immediately upon knowing that they wish to homeschool.

  • The Office of the Deputy Superintendent will offer an invitation to the parents/guardians to review the requirements of home-based instruction if requested.

  • Upon completion of the review process, the Deputy Superintendent will submit the request to the Portsmouth School Committee for approval.

  • The parent/guardian may begin home-based instruction immediately after the submittal of the letter of intent to homeschool. The parent/guardian will receive a letter of acceptance or denial for their home instruction, immediately following a School Committee decision. If the reason for denial is unsatisfactory, an appeal may be made to the State Education Commission.

  • If the parent/guardian decides to cease homeschooling, the Deputy Superintendent’s office should be notified and the children enrolled in a public school or an approved private school.

If you are a new family to the district and are requesting to homeschool your child/children we are requesting you register your child with the PSD or submit a copy of your child's birth certificate, two proofs of residency and a copy of your ID along with your Letter of Intent & Compliance Agreement and the Curriculum Form.

Please call the office of the Deputy Superintendent at 401-683-1039 ext 1004 if you have any questions regarding our policy.

Homeschooled students who wish to participate in interscholastic athletics must meet the requirements set forth by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and must make a written request to the Deputy Superintendent of Schools.  Homeschooled students who wish to participate in an extra-curricular activity must meet the requirements set forth by the Portsmouth School Committee.  Permission will be granted on a space-available basis and in the absence of any cost to the district.  Students shall follow all rules and meet the same requirements as established for regular students.  Parents/guardians will be required to provide transportation to and from the approved activity.

A student who completes an approved program of homeschooling is not eligible to receive a Portsmouth High School diploma.
