PSD Weather/Emergency Decision Protocol

PSD Weather/Emergency Decision Protocol 2025-2026

As we enter the holiday season, we also begin to prepare for the arrival of winter weather. While the temperatures may not fully show it yet, colder months are quickly approaching. To ensure everyone is informed and prepared, please take a moment to review the protocol our district will follow should weather conditions or other emergencies impact the school day.

The Superintendent will make final decisions regarding weather-related or emergency school cancellations. Whenever possible, these decisions will be communicated by 9:00 p.m. the evening before a school day.

If a situation requires a decision the following morning, communication will be shared by 5:00 a.m., whenever possible.

Decisions requiring an early dismissal or cancellation of after-school activities will be made and communicated by 12:00 p.m. on that school day.

Decisions will be communicated in the following ways:

A phone, email, and text message will be sent through the district’s mass communication system. These contacts are pulled directly from our Student Information System (Aspen). Please ensure your contact information is up to date in Aspen for any of the formats in which you would like to receive a message. The best point of contact for this is your school's main office.

Information will be posted to the RI Broadcasters Association, which links to all local media outlets.  Information will be posted to the PSD Website as well as the district’s Twitter/X and Facebook accounts.

Per the 2025-2026 district calendar, the first cancellation will result in a traditional
snow day, which will add a day at the end of the school year. The district will utilize its RIDE-approved Virtual Learning Plan for any additional cancellation days beyond our allotted traditional snow days. If technology or connectivity issues arise, our teachers are prepared to support students in completing missed assignments.

If you are currently experiencing any technology or internet access challenges, please contact your school’s office staff. We will work collaboratively with your family to develop a plan that ensures your child can access lessons.
