Grade 7 Arts and Music

Printmaking (One Trimester for All Students)

Students in the Printmaking class will meet twice a rotation for a Trimester. In this class, students will learn and apply knowledge of the techniques and tools of various forms of Printmaking. With a focus on the elements and principles of design, they will explore Monoprinting, Reduction Printing, and Dot painting. Multiple themes and printmaking artists will be introduced and discussed through all the lessons.

This program is affiliated with the Portsmouth High School Career and Technical Education program, specifically the Academy for Visual Arts and Design.

Architectural Concepts & Design (One Trimester for All Students)

Students in Architecture classes meet two days out of a five-day rotation for one trimester. Students will design and model modern-day art projects based on inspiration and knowledge from historical and current-day structures. They will begin their architectural study with the drawing process of one-point perspective.  Landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes are practiced. Using STEAM -Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics- integration,  a 3D architectural model of a Tiny House is created as a culminating activity.  National Core Arts Standards

This program is affiliated with the Portsmouth High School Career and Technical Education program, specifically the Academy for Media Communications and Digital Video Productions.

Band (All Year for Students Who Choose Band)

Seventh Grade Band is an ensemble that provides students with learning and performance opportunities on wind and percussion instruments.  The primary focus is the development, continuation and expansion of skills learned in sixth grade band.  In addition to large group ensembles, individual growth and achievement are encouraged through participation in adjudicated solo and ensemble contests, All-State bands, solo and small ensemble performances, and private lessons. 

This program is connected to the Portsmouth High School Career and Technical Education program:  The Academy for Music Production.  Initial eligibility for this program requires a student to have participated in band or chorus at the high school level.

Music Exploratory (All Year for Students Who Choose Exploratory)

Seventh Grade Exploratory music class is a class that meets for the year. Students will study the History of Jazz in America. Students will develop their cultural awareness and music literacy skills through various activities. Students will learn how to play scales, simple melodies and chords to support a melody on the piano and ukulele. 

This program is connected to the Portsmouth High School Career and Technical Education program:  The Academy for Music Production.  Initial eligibility for this program requires a student to have participated in band or chorus at the high school level.
