Grade 6 Arts and Music
Sculpture (One Trimester for All Students)

Students in 6th grade Sculpture class will meet 2 times a rotation for a Trimester. In this class, there will be an exploration of various materials with a focus on sculpture. Students will be able to explore the mediums of clay, plaster, and collage. Students will learn and apply many different sculpture techniques, emphasizing elements and principles of design and coil building, scratch and attach method with clay, modeling and molding with plaster, and upcycling to create pieces in these lessons. Various artists are introduced and discussed throughout all the lessons, and interdisciplinary connections are made between ancient civilizations and their art forms.

Digital Media and Design (One Trimester for All Students)

Students in 6th grade Digital Media classes meet 2 days out of the 5 day rotation for one trimester. Students will concentrate on using digital media resources and materials to create original works of art based on lesson topics. Students will be challenged to express ideas through digital media technology. They will explore a wide range of programs, software, and applications to create images, web pages and more. Students work individually as well as collaboratively, while considering their intended audience, mode of expression, and editing skills.

Band (All Year for Students Who Choose Band)

Sixth-grade band is an ensemble that provides students with learning and performance opportunities on wind and percussion instruments. The primary focus is the development, continuation, and expansion of basic skills learned in fifth-grade band. In addition to homogeneous group instruction, individual growth and achievement are encouraged through participation in adjudicated solo and ensemble contests, solo and small ensemble performances, and private lessons. New students are welcome.
This program is connected to the Portsmouth High School Career and Technical Education program: The Academy for Music Production. To be eligible for this program, a student must have participated in band or chorus at the high school level.
Music Exploratory (All Year for Students Who Choose Exploratory)

Students in the Sixth-Grade Exploratory music class will primarily play recorder and various percussion instruments, building on the skills that they developed in 5th grade. They will explore the ancient beginnings of music, starting with the Middle Ages and ending with the Classical and Romantic eras, and learn about the composers who existed during those years. Students will also study different types of performing ensembles, such as orchestras and concert bands.

Chorus (All year for Students Who Choose Chorus)

The sixth-grade Chorus class meets for the full year. Students participate in rehearsals preparing for two concerts, one in the fall and one in the spring. For our winter concert, students will sing selections from multiple genres, including Pop, Jazz, and Broadway, along with themed music. We will also explore the different types of voices that the students hear in the music they listen to every day through class activities and projects.
