Portsmouth Middle School Grade 5 Student Experience

Grade 5 Science
Curated by: Margie Brennan
Curriculum Information from the Rhode Island Department of Education
Students will explore questions like how matter changes, how water is distributed on Earth, how new substances form, and how matter and energy cycle through ecosystems. They learn that matter is made of tiny particles and that its total weight is conserved during changes. Students investigate whether combining substances creates new ones and model interactions between Earth's systems. They describe how plants obtain materials from air and water and trace the movement of matter and energy through food chains. Students examine patterns in shadows, day and night, and seasonal star changes. Key Disciplinary Core Ideas include PS1–PS3, LS1–LS2, and ESS1–ESS3. Crosscutting concepts such as patterns and cause and effect help organize these ideas. Students use scientific practices like modeling, investigation, data analysis, and evidence-based argument to build their understanding.
