•  Welcome to Visual Arts at Melville Elementary School

The art curriculum this year is rich and well rounded. We will work with 2D and 3D media, both independently and collaboratively. All of our art lessons are aligned with the National Visual Arts Standards. Sometimes your child will create artwork that results in a take home piece, and sometimes they will create experiential work that is momentary. But my goal is that they are always engaged and exploring.

Our units will emphasize global art this year. Historical and contemporary art from all continents will inform many of our lessons. Specific elements and principles of art and design will be embedded in all of them. All grades will be introduced to proper material techniques while also being challenged to imagine new ways to use them.

On our first day of class I told every student that you do not need to be the best at drawing to be the best artist. We will build on this concept as we discuss different art careers and how design thinking will strengthen all of their endeavors.
