Welcome to Hathaway & Melville Music! In our lessons we warmup our voices, practice a musical skill, engage in a musical movement activity, build our teamwork/ensemble skills, develop our musical literacy, improvise answers using our known pitch patterns, and culminate with a song-book. Through this structure, we are always performing, creating, and responding to music as outlined by our new Core Arts Standards. Being able to hear musical elements, articulate what we hear using musical vocabulary, and gaining confidence in ourselves as performers is what musical literacy in our classrooms is about. I hope to inspire the children to continue their musical development at the middle school by joinging the band, singing in the chorus, being a knowledgable music listener, or plant the seeds as life-long appreciators and supporters of music expression.
My teaching background includes grade 7-12 Orchestra Director at Bay View Academy; Portsmouth middle school and high school band, K-8 general music; private clarinet instructor and enrichment chorus conductor; as well as the UCONN 1999 Men's Pep Band Director, conducting TA, UCONN Marching Band graduate assistant; clarinetist with the American Band of Providence; and Cooperating Teacher for the University of Rhode Island. Setting the foundation and musical values in our K-3 students and mentoring prospective teachers that they can be successful future elementary general music teachers is where my careeer path has led.
I look forward each year to watching your child's musical growth!
