Mr. Joseph N. Amaral

Dear Students, Parents and Friends of Portsmouth High School,

As a former Portsmouth coach, teacher, assistant principal and now as PHS Principal, I am truly honored to support the academic and social emotional needs of our students. When students cross the threshold of our school they enter into a special place where teachers challenge each student with a rigorous and challenging curriculum. Last year, students enrolled in a record number of advanced placement courses and with a vibrant Response to Intervention program student achieved high levels of learning. We have a robust STEAM program that is supported by "Project Lead the Way." Our school has been honored by the Rhode island Department of Education as a "Commended School." Our teacher professionals are committed to high-quality instruction and are always seeking new and exciting ways to make real life learning happen in their classrooms and beyond.

We believe that core values have a place in our learning community. PRIDE, our credo to support successful behaviors, makes our students reach and attain their goals;
*P*erserverance
*R*espect
*I*nnovation
*D*edication
*E*ngagement.

Our school is also embarking on positive behavioral support systems with token reward items such as PRIDE bucks to celebrate student success. Our students have opportunities to participate in numerous after school activities, clubs, and athletics to round out their learning experiences. We recognize that extracurricular activities not only builds school identity but student confidence as well.

We strive, through our rich academic program, to support students as life long learners and prepare each student with 21st Century skills for college or career readiness. It is my hope that students, parents, teachers and our community work together to foster the best in each student. Working together, we can make Portsmouth High School the best place in which students can learn, grow and follow their dreams for the future.

Sincerely,

Joseph N. Amaral, Principal
