My name is Vicky Flaherty and this is my 28th year of teaching. I have lived in Portsmouth for 18 years with my husband and my cat, Mac. I have 2 grown children and 6 beautiful grandchildren. I met my husband, Mark at the Rhode Island Airshow in 1998. We were married in 1999 on Rose Island in Newport. On my wedding day, I interviewed for a teaching position with PSD. I was hired to teach K-5 at the one-room school house on Prudence Island. I commuted to school by ferry to Prudence Island every day for 10 years.
Before moving to Rhode Island, I taught 2nd grade for 10 years in Sweet Home Alabama. In 1996, I was nominated for participation in the International Aerospace Education: Russian Space Science Program and taught at a Space Camp in Siberia for 16 days. I also attended the Space Academy for Educators in Huntsville, AL and was nominated by a national panel to participate in a NASA workshop at Langley Research Center. I formed the first Young Astronaut Club at my school in Alabama.
I have taught kindergarten at both Melville and Hathaway. I am beginning my 8th year of teaching kindergarten at Hathaway.
Teaching kindergarten is so much fun! We play, sing, smile, laugh, love, and learn. I strive to provide a loving and safe atmosphere in my classroom, allowing children to blossom at a natural and individual pace.
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year full of exciting opportunities for your child to learn and grow. I hope to get to know each and every one of you so that we can work together to help your child reach his or her greatest potential.
"You can teach a student a lesson for a day, but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives." -Clay P. Bedford
